Counselling Services

"There are no shortcuts to any place worth going"

-Beverly Sills

Foothills Counselling Psychology offers a variety of counselling services, including individual therapy, couples counselling, and assessment services for children, adolescents and young adults, as well as offers adult DBT Skills Training groups at various times throughout the year.

Individual Counselling

Individual counselling for children age 10 and up, adolescents, and adults. Initial sessions of 80 minutes in duration are recommended to allow adequate time for assessment, rapport building, and the setting of therapy goals. Sessions, however, are available either on a 50 minute or 80 minutes basis, depending on your preferences or needs. For instance, some individuals prefer longer sessions and feel they get more out of the session when they have more time per visit. Others find 50 minute sessions to be more practical or affordable. You can choose to book what works best for you.
At Foothills Counselling Psychology, our psychologists are trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), specialized trauma therapies including Prolonged Exposure (PE), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). We also offer specialized formal assessments for children to young adults. Although each psychologist at Foothills Counselling Psychology is unique, we all bring a client-centred and strength-based approach when working with our clients.

Trauma Therapy

Foothills Counselling Psychology offers individual trauma therapy for children, adolescents, and adults using either Prolonged Exposure for PTSD (PE), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). You and your psychologist will choose which trauma treatment is best for you. Trauma specific therapy requires longer sessions (80 minutes) to allow time for exposure work and processing.

See Trauma Therapy page for more detailed information on the various trauma therapies available.

Telephone and On-line Counselling Options

Rural travel is not always practical or possible, so Foothills Counselling offers telephone or on-line counselling options using highly encrypted and confidential platforms such as Jane/app or Doxy.me . Your psychologist will discuss and assess both the risks and benefits to telephone or on-line counselling prior to deciding whether it is an effective option for you.

DBT Telephone Coaching

Foothills Counselling Psychology offers DBT skills specific phone coaching to clients who are learning and using DBT Skills as par of their treatment. DBT Skills phone coaching is typically a short 15-20 minute phone intervention to help you effectively use skills or navigate a current challenging situation. Receiving timely coaching and support can be effective at helping you practice and generalize new skills you have learned. DBT skill phone coaching is not a crisis telephone service, but a skills building intervention as part of a standardized protocol within DBT therapy. Your psychologist will contact you within a 24 hour period from the time of your call requesting coaching. If you are in crisis, please call 911, the Calgary Distress Centre at 403-266-4357, or go to your nearest emergency centre/hospital.

See Fees page for fee information, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Page for more detailed information on the DBT Skills.

DBT Skills Group for Adults

Foothills Counselling Psychology offers DBT Skills Training groups for adults (18+) scheduled several times throughout the year. DBT Skills Training groups are available for 2.5 hours, one day per week, for 15 weeks. These groups teach the 4 main sets of DBT skills based on Marsha Linehan’s (2014) Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skills Training Manual: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness skills. Because mindfulness skills are core skills within DBT, these skills are included at the start of each session.

See Fees page for fee information and DBT Group Registration page for registration inquiries.

This group is offered for 1.5 hours every other week and is a sharing group where participants can discuss their use of the skills and/or receive skill use suggestions and support from the group. This group helps participants maintain their skills knowledge, practice, and generalize the DBT skills in their day to day lives through a peer support focused group setting. Participants can choose to participate for as long as they find the group to be beneficial to their needs, but a minimum 4 session commitment is required.
